The extraordinary story of how one baby made her victorious entrance into the world

The extraordinary story of how one baby made her victorious entrance into the world

It was Easter of 2017. I was on vacation in Dallas visiting my grandmother, when I felt a sudden dizziness, as if my blood pressure had dropped. I thought it was because of the change in altitude or because I was in a new city. Pregnancy never crossed my mind.

The night before I returned to Mexico, I felt absolutely awful. I was nauseous with an ever swelling stomach. No medication could help me. I took a 26 hour bus ride back to my hometown Toluca, Mexico. As I was getting closer and closer to my home,  I was in the most excruciating pain of my life. My body felt like it was on fire, and anything I ate came right back up.

When I finally got back to Mexico, I rushed to the hospital. The doctor treated me for colitis and gastritis from the trip and sent me home. But as soon as the medicine wore off, I was in the most harrowing pain. So much so that I couldn’t walk.

I went to the doctor again and they had two suspicions. The first was that I had an inflamed appendix. The second was that I had an ectopic pregnancy, where the embryo implants outside of the uterus.

I tested positive for pregnancy. Since I had all the symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy, the doctors sent me to the emergency room to take the baby out. I was at risk of death and there was no way my baby would survive!

My body and heart ached because I had miscarried before, and this would be my second failed pregnancy.

As soon as I got to the ER, I was admitted to the ultrasound room. The doctors were amazed because they NEVER found the embryo. They couldn’t explain how I tested positive, yet there was no "pregnancy". Finally, someone said, "Lady. Your appendix is about to burst, and we have to operate immediately.”

I woke up dazed in the operating room, and could faintly make out the doctor and nurses. Apparently, my operation was complicated. They removed my appendix, which had ruptured and filled my intestines with toxic fluids. So they had to take my intestines OUT OF MY BODY and clean them before putting them back in place.

I felt like I was run over by a car. I was miserable. And at the end of this, I found out I WAS pregnant! It was amazing news despite the agonizing pain I was in.

The next day the gynecologist came in and told me, “Ma'am, we have to do an abortion.”

“Why?!?!” I asked.

She explained that because I was completely anesthetized and my pregnancy was less than a month old,  I wasn’t going to develop a fetus. I had a 1% chance of staying pregnant, and my health was at risk.

I refused to do an abortion, so they made me sign a document saying I was responsible for my health. I spent almost a week in the hospital after my surgery. I couldn’t eat or drink from all the pain. My lips and tongue got so dry that they’d crack and bleed… I was dehydrated and sick but determined to survive.

A week later, I was discharged. I had a vaginal ultrasound done, revealing that I had a sac but no embryo. As you can imagine, I thought it would be another failed pregnancy.  But the doctor suggested to give it more time. Some babies don’t show up right away on an ultrasound …

After seven days, I had another ultrasound. There was my well-formed baby with a steadily beating heart. I remember it looked like a gummy bear!

It was literally the happiest day in my life!.

My pregnancy was very risky. I was basically on bed rest for nine months. It was a heavy and difficult year, filled with painful injections, medicines, and a daily handful of vitamins.

I was told that my baby was at risk for malformation or down syndrome…. But on October 3, 2017, at the 4D ultrasound, they finally told me what I was hoping and praying for. “ Congratulations! You have a healthy girl!”

My heart leaped with joy when I saw her little face on the screen!

When she finally came into the world on December 13, 2017, after everything we had been through, I named her Victoria. She has brightened my whole life ever since.
